Simple and Realistic Ways to Be More Eco-Conscious

With Earth Day happening this month, we wanted to bring some focus to ways you can be more eco-conscious in your everyday life. Join us in making this world one we’ll have for a long time.

Things You Can Do For Yourself

When it comes to being more eco-conscious, starting with yourself is the easiest place to begin. You’ll also find simple changes to be super rewarding, as much of the things you do for yourself you’ll be doing every day.

Make simple swaps in the bathroom

  • Use a refillable service to refill your existing shampoo, conditioner, and body wash containers when they’re empty
  • Switch to reusable bamboo cotton pads instead of disposable
  • Try a bamboo toothbrush
  • Opt for recycled toilet paper or even a bidet!
  • Switch to reusable menstrual products
  • Incorporate skincare with clean ingredients into your routine

Rethink your plate

  • Try out more than just a meatless Monday. Maybe make it a meatless Monday, Wednesday, and Friday!
  • Remember to eat those leftovers
  • Check the fridge and pantry before you head to the grocery store, and plan your meals around what you already have
  • Opt for loose leaf tea instead of tea bags (of which many contain plastics that don’t fully biodegrade)

Things You Can Do For Your Home

Now that you’ve mastered your daily and weekly eco-routines, it’s time to bring that new mindset further into the broader landscape of your home. Take a glance around the room you’re in. Can you think of three ways to quickly improve your space?

Make some swaps in the kitchen

  • Start a small herb garden, even in your kitchen
  • Switch out your plastic straws for metal ones, and even bring them with you when you’re going out
  • Use cloth napkins instead of paper
  • Pack your lunch in glass containers instead of plastic bags
  • Use dishcloths instead of paper towels

Make your home more energy efficient

  • Swap out all your lights for LED versions
  • Unplug your devices when you’re not using them to avoid draining power
  • Wash your clothes in cold water with an eco-friendly laundry detergent
  • Hang your clothes to dry instead of using the dryer
  • Install a low-flow showerhead

Things You Can Do For Your Community

By this step, being eco-conscious is something you live and breathe, so become more active in your community. By adjusting your errand routines or involving others in your green steps, you’ll begin to see how small changes can have a big impact.

Live local

  • If you have to commute, carpool or take public transit
  • Get involved in your local community garden
  • Support your local small businesses and get clothes tailored or shoes repaired

Shop consciously

  • Shop at your local farmer’s market instead of a big grocery chain
  • Expand your closet by shopping at thrift or consignment stores instead of buying new
  • Support companies that have ethical practices
  • Choose products with packaging that is eco-friendly

Bring NENA Into Your Routine

Eco-friendly skincare, NENA natural skin care

At NENA, we think skincare should be simple, clean, and sustainable and that environmentally friendly actions are an everyday choice.

Our glacial clay and mineral water is sourced locally in BC to reduce our carbon footprint, and processed in the same province. We’re also able to use over 95% of our clay in the same form that it’s harvested in, keeping waste to an absolute minimum while retaining the natural benefits of this key ingredient.

We also use recycled paper and vegetable oil ink for our product packaging, and recently upgraded our mail packaging to biodegradable packing peanuts that can be composted or safely rinsed down the sink.
