Mom Life: 5 Ways to Have the Most Relaxing Evening at Home

It’s a rare occurrence, but when it happens, it’s almost unbelievable you’re not sure what to do with it.

The baby’s taking a nap. The house is clean. The kids are bathed and dreaming away. Now what? You finally have a rare evening where you have time to yourself and can put the to-do list away, so what do you do? Here are some tips compiled by the NENA Skincare team for making the most out of your free evening.

Run A Hot Bath

Run a bath

Take out all the rubber duckies and no tears shampoo and stash them under a towel so for a hot second you can pretend this little oasis belongs to you and you only.

Light some candles, pour some epsom salts into the water, and turn on a little jazz music (or hip hop if that’s your 7pm style) and settle in for a moment of relaxation. Bring everything you think you might need for the next 30 minutes to an hour within arm’s reach, like a book, a glass of wine, or even a snack so that you can focus solely on the moment.

Make A Warm Drink

Make a hot drink

Is there really anything that brings you back into the moment like sipping on a comforting drink? In order to avoid caffeine in the evenings, we suggest this delicious alternative.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon nut butter
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1.5 tablespoons cacao powder
  • 1 teaspoon maca powder (optional)
  • A dollop of honey, maple syrup, or agave
  • 1.5-2 cups hot water or warm milk

Combine all in a blender and voila! You have yourself a frothy mug of deliciousness.

Read A Good Book

Read a book

How often do you get to just sit and enjoy a book uninterrupted? Probably not often.

Take this free evening of yours and grab that read you started months ago and never got to revisit, snuggle up onto the couch or dive into bed, and don’t turn off the light until you’re actually satisfied. Or until motherhood exhaustion forces you to sleep.

Some of our favourite reads right now include:

  • “Big Friendship. How We Keep Each Other Close” by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman
  • “Everything I Never Told You” by Celeste Ng
  • “An American Marriage” by Tayari Jones
  • “The Light We Lost” by Jill Santopolo
  • “Conversations With Friends” by Sally Rooney

Binge A Little TV

Binge a show

And don’t feel guilty about it! Sometimes all you want to do when you have an extra hour to yourself is re-watch your favourite TV show or get deep into an episode of your favourite reality TV obsession, and that’s perfect.

Best when accompanied by sweats, no bra, and maybe some popcorn, as long as you’re not watching cartoons, you’re good to go.

Pamper Yourself
