The world of skincare is always evolving, discovering, and having new and innovative ingredients every time. One such ingredient that has been creating buzz is Bakuchiol. Often touted as a natural substitute for retinol, Bakuchiol has become a popular choice due to its many benefits.
Gentle and Natural
Derived from Psoralea corylifolia plant seeds, Bakuchiol is a natural compound unlike retinol, which is a synthetic vitamin A derivative. Its gentle nature makes it an excellent option for individuals with sensitive skin. Bakuchiol provides comparable benefits to retinol, such as diminishing the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles, without the typical side effects like redness, irritation, or peeling that retinoids can cause.
Anti-Aging
Bakuchiol has gained immense popularity due to its remarkable ability to fight the signs of aging. Studies have shown that it can boost collagen production, resulting in the improvement of skin elasticity and reduction of wrinkles. Moreover, Bakuchiol effectively reduces hyperpigmentation and evens out skin tone, resulting in a more youthful and glowing complexion.
Hydrating and Moisturizing
In addition to its other benefits, Bakuchiol serves as an excellent moisturizer. It works by sealing in the skin's natural moisture, thus preventing water loss and maintaining a healthy hydration level. As a result, Bakuchiol can be easily integrated into one's skincare routine, eliminating the need for additional moisturizing products and simplifying the regimen for many.
Anti-Inflammatory
Bakuchiol is an excellent option for individuals with sensitive or acne-prone skin due to its exceptional anti-inflammatory properties. It effectively reduces redness, soothes skin irritation, and helps alleviate different skin conditions. Bakuchiol is a gentler alternative to potent ingredients like retinoids, which some may be apprehensive to use on their skin.
Gentle Compared To Retinol
Retinol often needs to be gradually implemented into a skincare routine due to potential side effects. Bakuchiol, on the other hand, is generally well-tolerated by most skin types. This means it can be introduced more quickly, providing benefits without the need for an extended adjustment period.
Above mentioned are just some of the many benefits of Bakuchiol. Incorporate Bakuchiol to your skincare routine and experience the changes yourself.

Collagen acts as the building block of our skin, providing it with structure, firmness, and elasticity. However, as we age, the body's natural collagen production declines. This leads to the appearance of enlarged pores, wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. This is where clay masks step into the spotlight.
The Clay Mask Phenomenon
Clay masks have been wildly used for centuries for their ability to detoxify and purify the skin. Ancient stories told, even Cleopatra, the legendary queen of Egypt uses clay masks with honey to maintain her youthful looking skin.
Its unique composition, typically rich in minerals such as magnesium, zinc, and calcium, draws out impurities, unclogs pores, and absorbs excess oil. Beyond these benefits, clay masks are now being celebrated for their connection to collagen production.
The Collagen Connection
1. Mineral Infusion: Clay masks are often loaded with essential minerals supporting skin health. Silica is a mineral commonly found in clay that can contribute to collagen production. By providing the skin with these essential minerals, clay masks create an optimal environment for collagen production.
2. Stimulation: Clay masks, when applied to the skin, gently exfoliate the surface and promote blood circulation. This increased circulation facilitates the delivery of a greater nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells, creating an environment that supports the synthesis of collagen.
3. Detoxification: The detoxifying effect of clay masks helps eliminate pollutants and free radicals that can contribute to collagen breakdown. By reducing oxidative stress, clay masks indirectly support the preservation of existing collagen.
Choosing the Right Clay Mask
Different clay types offer distinct benefits for collagen production:
1. Kaolin Clay: Known for its gentle exfoliating properties, kaolin clay is suitable for all skin types. It helps stimulate circulation, better absorption of nutrients, and promote collagen synthesis.
2. Bentonite Clay: Bentonite clay is celebrated for its versatile properties. Its mineral content aids in collagen revitalization while addressing excess sebum.
3. Glacial Oceanic Clay: Rich in minerals, this clay rejuvenates the skin and promotes collagen synthesis. Its high absorbency clears away toxins, aiding in the skin's natural healing and renewal processes.
Incorporating Clay Masks into Your Routine
To harness the collagen-boosting potential of clay masks, consider the following tips:
1. Preparation: Cleanse your skin thoroughly with your favorite facial wash before applying a clay mask. This ensures maximum absorption of minerals and nutrients.
2. Frequency: Incorporate clay masks into your skincare routine 1-2 times a week to maintain optimal collagen stimulation.
3. Hydration: After using clay mask, follow up with a hydrating moisturizer to lock in the benefits and prevent over-drying of the skin.
Clay masks are more than just a skincare trend. They are a bridge between tradition and science. As our understanding of skincare evolves, clay masks emerge as an invaluable tool in the search of youthful, radiant skin. By maximizing their collagen-boosting properties, we can unlock a new level of skin radiance and embark on a journey to ageless beauty.
Incorporate clay mask to your skincare routine and experience the changes yourself.

]]>Exposure to sunlight – including both UVA and UVB rays – is associated with damage to skin cells and DNA and to advanced skin aging. Sunscreen helps protect against the negative effects of UVA and UVB rays. But there are a lot of misconceptions about when, where, and how often to wear sunscreen.
We’re here to help you debunk those myths and help you make the best skinscare choices when it comes to sun protection.
Myth #1: You only should wear sunscreen if you’re going outside.
False
You should consider wearing sunscreen, even while indoors. While UVB rays are blocked by glass, UVA rays, which may increase your risk of skin cancer, are not. If you spend a lot of time exposed to window-filtered sun (like during a car ride or if your desk is next to a window), you skin may still suffer the negative effects of sun exposure.
Myth #2: I can stay out in the sun longer if I wear a higher SPF
False
Regardless of SPF, sunscreen loses effectiveness over time. A higher SPF offers slightly more protection, but not a longer length of time for protection. Regardless of your product’s SPF rating, make sure to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
Myth #3: Only people with pale skin who easily burn need to wear sunscreen
False
Regardless of your skin tone, ethnicity, or complexion, no one is immune from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Although dark skin tones naturally produce more melanin to protect skin, it’s not enough to prevent the negative effects of sun exposure including skin cancer, wrinkles and photo-aging. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone, regardless of skin tone, wear sunscreen because “anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender or race.”
Myth #4: Mineral Sunscreen isn’t as effective as chemical sunscreen
False
In 2021, the Food and Drug Administration, which also governs sunscreen safety, proposed updates to sunscreen regulations. It found that only two ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, could be classified as safe and effective, based on the currently available information.
For NENA’s Mineral Sunscreen, we use these exact ingredients – titanium dioxide and zinc oxide – as the physical protectors against UV rays. By relying on physical blocking properties rather than chemical components, there’s also the added benefit that our sunscreen provides instant protection upon application, eliminating the need to wait for 20 minutes for it to take effect.
Myth #5: Skin cancer is easy to treat
False
According to the Cancer Council of Australia, skin cancer treatment can be much more serious than simply having a lesion taken off. It can include surgery, chemotherapy and/or permanent scarring. There is also the risk that skin cancer can spread to other parts of your body. As with most things, prevention is always better than cure.
Let’s start with why sunscreen is important. Exposure to sunlight – including both UVA and UVB rays – is associated with damage to skin cells and DNA and to advanced skin aging. Sunscreen helps protect against the negative effects of UVA and UVB rays.
The key difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens comes down to how they block UVA and UVB rays. Mineral sunscreen sits on the surface of your skin and acts as a shield (that’s why they are sometimes also called ‘physical sunscreens’) while chemical sunscreen contain active ingredients that act like a sponge to absorb UV rays before your skin can soak them up.
Chemical sunscreens have been known to be more irritating to sensitive or acne-prone skin, and studies have shown they can be absorbed systemically into your body. Some studies have reported finding sunscreen ingredients in breast milk, urine and blood plasma samples - another reason to think twice about what you’re putting on your skin. You know your sunscreen is ‘chemical’ if they contain ingredients on the label like: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate.
In 2021, the Food and Drug Administration, which governs sunscreen safety, proposed its most recent updates to sunscreen regulations. It found that only two ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, could be classified as safe and effective, based on the currently available information.
In our NENA Mineral Sunscreen formulation, we use titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as our physical protectors against UV rays. By relying on physical blocking properties rather than chemical components, there’s also the added benefit that our sunscreen provides instant protection upon application, eliminating the need to wait for 20 minutes for it to take effect. And, because our formulation is 99% derived from natural ingredients, our sunscreen is also reef and ocean friendly option, a small step to helping protect our earth and minimizing our environmental footprint.
No matter what, sunscreen is an important line of defense from harmful ultraviolet radiation. So choose Mineral Sunscreen so you can pick the best option for your body and our environment.

Just in time for the summer season, we've launched our highly-anticipated, award-winning NENA SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen. Non-nano zinc oxide offers immediate broad spectrum protection against UVA/UVB rays, while aloe vera, calendula, and green tea extract hydrates and soothes the skin.
Like all NENA Skincare products, we've included Sea Silt (glacial clay) in the formulation to offer further skin-protection benefits in our product.
The unique green pigment of the sunscreen also offers colour correcting effects for redness, and the cosmos-approved, 99% naturally derived formulation is reef and ocean friendly.
Why is sunscreen important?
Exposure to sunlight – including both UVA and UVB rays – is associated with damage to skin cells and DNA and to advanced skin aging. Sunscreen helps protect against the negative effects of UVA an UVB rays.
Americans continue to be diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, at rising rates. A 2011 study of Australians found they cut their risk of melanoma in half by age 50 when they applied SPF 15 sunscreen daily, wore hats and avoided the sun in other ways. Two 2020 studies, one of perceived skin cancer risk and another on the safety and efficacy of sunscreen, both showed that sunscreens protect against melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
Why you'll love NENA Mineral Sunscreen:
Non-nano zinc oxide immediately protects against UVA/UVB rays (PA+++)
Non-greasy and lightweight texture
99% naturally-derived, Cosmos-approved
Reef and ocean-friendly
Unique green colour offers correcting effects against skin redness
Suitable for all skin types
Awarded silver in the 2023 CertClean beauty awards
Why is Mineral Sunscreen better?
We incorporate titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in our mineral sunscreen formula, as they function as physical barriers against UV rays. These ingredients have been widely acknowledged by the FDA as both safe and effective. By relying on physical blocking properties rather than chemical components, our sunscreen provides instant protection upon application, eliminating the need to wait for 20 minutes for it to take effect.
What does reef safe mean?
Our NENA Mineral Sunscreen formulation does not contain the active ingredients of oxybenzone and octinoxate (chemical ingredients found in conventional sunscreens), which can be toxic to fish, coral, and other marine life. In general, mineral-based sunscreen is often considered the reef and ocean friendly option, a small step to helping protect our earth.
Why is NENA Mineral Sunscreen green?
The unique green pigment of the sunscreen also offers colour correcting effects for redness. In colour theory, red and green are opposite colours. So green concealer, for example, works to neutralize and cover up redness (blemishes or blotchy-ness) on the skin, creating the appearance of an even skin tone.

Ingredient Transparency - Where are your product ingredients from? Savvy consumers are now asking more questions about ingredients and product supply chains, with a continued interest in understanding where the ingredients they are putting on their skin are coming from.
Minimalism: With so many skincare products on the market, finding the right products for your skin can be overwhelming and intimidating. Some consumers are turning to a more minimalist approach to skincare. Beauty Subscription Services - A survey on subscription boxes reported 25% of Americasn are currently receiving a subscription box, and another 32% of respondents plan to subscribe in the next six months. In previous years, NENA has been featured in Ipsy and Simply Beautiful Box and we are excited for more to come in 2023.

It works by increasing cell turnover and stimulating collagen production in the skin. Expect to see more retinol skincare products on the market in 2023.
Niacinamide - Also known as Vitamin B3, niacinamide is a versatile ingredient that has been shown to have a number of benefits for the skin. It can improve skin tone by evening out skin texture, reducing dark spots, and inflammation and redness in the skin. Expect to see niacinamide in more skincare products in 2023.
Lip Care - After years of masking and covering up our smiles, in 2023, we can finally expect a comeback in lip care. So pucker up and make sure you’re taking care of your lips with exfoliating and hydrating products like our new NENA Overnight Lip Mask!
Product Inclusivity: The beauty industry is becoming more inclusive, with a wider range of products being offered to people of different skin types and tones. From makeup to skincare to haircare, in 2023, we can expect to see more brands focusing on diversity and inclusivity both in product offerings and marketing campaigns.

For thirty years our company has been harvesting natural glacial clay from Northern BC for its unique mineral composition. All our natural skincare products begin with a base of glacial oceanic clay or its derivative Glacial Mineral Water. From there, our R&D Team adds, layers, mixes, and combines other natural ingredients and stabilizers to formulate our skincare products, ensuring effective results.
Creating our first and purest clay product: the NENA Clay Mask
The NENA Clay Mask is our first, original, and award-winning product. It’s made of 99% Glacial Clay - with no fillers or unnecessary ingredients. Glacial Clay in its natural form has properties that are clinically proven to help tighten pores and reduce oil on the face, so other than harvesting and ‘cleaning’ the clay for use in skincare there wasn’t much more we had to do to its natural state.
Dealing with a natural ingredient can be challenging at times. Glacial Clay naturally separates over time. In some of our earlier formulations our customers provided the feedback that their Clay Mask had a layer of liquid, so, in later editions, our R&D team tweaked and adjusted the formula to make sure the clay mask stays together for more effective skincare use.
In our production facilities in Richmond, BC, we pack and seal into two sizes - a 120g full-size Clay Mask product, and a 30g mini Clay Mask that’s suitable for travel.
What is Glacial Oceanic Clay?
Found in pristine, isolated areas along British Columbia’s northern coastline, the glacial oceanic clay sustainably harvested for NENA Skincare products started forming over 2.5 million years ago through the convergence of glacier and ocean deposits and continues to do so to this day. Maturing for thousands of years in pristine ocean waters, this nutritive Sea Silt (glacial oceanic clay) contains more than 60 skin-benefiting minerals and rare earth elements unique to this part of the world.
Benefits of a Glacial Oceanic Clay Mask
Speaking of skin-benefitting ingredients, what exactly are the benefits of a glacial oceanic clay mask? Glacial Clay is negatively charged, making it a powerful magnet for the positively-charged impurities trapped in the skin. Its fine particle size effectively removes dead skin cells and environmental pollutants, revealing a soft and toned complexion.
As part of our research and development process, our R&D team facilitates for our glacial clay to be tested by a third-party Canadian lab to verify the quality of our clay. These are the results:
Behind every NENA Skincare product is a small but mighty research and development (R&D) team who carefully formulates, tests, and refines each product to perfection. Learn more about our R&D team here.

]]>Making a resolutions list? Here are our five skincare resolutions to include.
The biggest flaw most people’s skincare routine has is that it consists of too many steps. Ingredients clash and conflict and our skin often can’t handle a lot of active ingredients all at once.
This year, pair down your routine. Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, SPF, and a mask for special days is all you need.
You take care of your face, neck, and chest twice daily, but what about the rest of your body? Don’t forget that your body skin also needs regular exfoliation and moisturization, especially places like our hands, feet, and elbows.
Next time you hop out of the shower make sure to lather your body in your favourite moisturizer. Maybe even give yourself a little massage while you’re at it.
Our skin takes time to show results, and no change is going to happen overnight. Stay consistent with your simple skincare routine and your skin will eventually show you it’s the happiest it’s ever been.
Don’t skip days, and definitely don’t go to bed with makeup on, and you’ll experience a happy glow soon enough.
Nothing makes for a clearer complexion than getting in a full night’s rest. It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! Sleep allows our body to rest and restore, and lack thereof can wreak havoc on our face in the form of acne, bags, and wrinkles.
So stick to that bedtime. It’ll reward you.

Able to hold 70% more water than any other natural substance, it’s an ingredient we couldn’t leave out of our Mineral Serum.
Our skin needs an optimal proportion of water in order to retain its softness and suppleness. Over time, oxy radicals, produced mostly through exposure to pollutants and sunlight, degrade and destroy hyaluronic acid, the main provider of our skin’s moisture.
That’s why adding hyaluronic acid into skincare products has become so popular. This ingredient’s unique small size allows it to be exceptionally penetrative, reaching deep into the dermis layer of the skin to mix with, attract, and maintain water.
All this makes hyaluronic acid one known as “nature’s moisturizer,” as it’s one of the most hydrophilic molecules.
When it comes to hydrating properties, hyaluronic acid is unmatched. Its ability to bind to water within the intercellular structure of the skin reinforces skin’s natural short and long-term moisturization. The result? Plump skin.
With regular use of hyaluronic acid products, you’ll see your skin restore its elasticity with the minimizing of wrinkles for a soft and silky skin texture. If you suffer from dry skin or dermatitis, hyaluronic acid might be your saviour, as it reduces flaking to enhance the appearance of damaged skin.
On top of all of that (like those benefits aren’t amazing enough), the way that it promotes blood and skin microcirculation and maintains metabolism and nutrient absorption leads to a fuller, more youthful appearance.
Now that we’ve sold you on softer and smoother skin, it’s time to incorporate hyaluronic acid into your regular skincare routine. Our new Mineral Serum combines the nourishing effects of Glacial Mineral Water, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin C and E to create a product that’s specially formulated to give your skin deep, lasting hydration. This lasting moisture helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to reveal more youthful and radiant-looking skin.
Combining hyaluronic acid with Chaga Mushrooms, the Mineral Serum reveals a youthful glow by restoring the skin’s elasticity. Customers are saying that the fast-absorbing consistency of this serum is what makes it so easy to include into their am and pm routines.
Like all our products, the Mineral Serum doesn’t favour one skin type and is designed for all with no harmful ingredients. The balanced and clean formula is made in Canada, Halal certified and Environmental Working Group (EWG) Verified, so you can feel good about what you’re including in your skincare routine.
Skincare routines can seem overwhelming, especially when you’re developing one from scratch. Rather than get caught up in all the steps, break it down into three main categories:
Whether you wear makeup or not, your skin comes in contact with environmental debris and dirt on the daily, not to mention you should be washing off sunscreen at the end of each day. That’s why morning and evening cleanses are basic additions to your skincare routine.
The right formula for a cleanser will clean your face without stripping essential, healthy oils. Try our NENA Cleansing Cream, which is enriched with natural botanical extracts and minerals from Glacial Oceanic Clay to help with the removal of environmental pollutants, makeup and dead skin cells to reveal a fresh, glowing appearance.
And if you are wearing makeup, we recommend a double cleanse. One to remove the majority of your makeup, and the second to get anything you may have missed.
Long gone are the toners of the ’80s and ’90s, which were strong astringents that were designed to dry out your pores and clear out any extra dirt your cleanser didn’t get. Nowadays, toners can be thought of as supplements to your skincare routine. They work to balance your complexion and help other nutrients absorb into your skin better.
Applying toner should be done after cleansing and before applying anything else (like a serum or moisturizer). While you can apply toner across your face with a cotton ball, you can also lose a lot of product that way. As long as your fingers are clean, dabbing it onto your face with your fingertips will help you get the most out of the product and bottle.
We love our Mineral Toner, packed with nutrient and antioxidant rich botanical extracts to help restore skin elasticity and firmness, hydrate and diminish lines and wrinkles.
Skin naturally loses the ability to retain moisture as we age, and daily activities can strip your skin’s surface of its natural hydrators. That’s why moisturizing is a key addition to a simple skincare routine.
And don’t think if you have oily or acne-prone skin that this is a step you can skip. Drying out the skin with cleansers and actives will actually irritate your skin further if you’re not rehydrating it. Just choose a moisturizer that’s non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores) and you’ll be good to go.
And eye creams? They’re not 100% necessary, and if the moisturizer you’re using is gentle enough (doesn’t include active ingredients like retinoid), the moisturizer you use on your face can be dabbed gently around the eye area too. Just remember the skin around your eye is sensitive, so don’t rub moisturizer in, but rather use your ring fingers to gently dab it in and around the eye.
Because our NENA Moisturizing Cream helps diminish lines and wrinkles, it makes the perfect moisturizer for your face and under-eye area.
And that’s it! Skincare School is easier to master than you may have thought. Just remember in the end that less is more and you’ll be on your way to happy, glowing skin.
Here are 10 common skincare mistakes you should be avoiding.
While a regular exfoliation routine is good, even in the summer months, to rid your face of dead skin cells and keep your pores unclogged, exfoliating should be left for the evening. That layer of dead skin actually serves as a barrier between you and UV rays, and chemical exfoliators like retinol, AHAs and BHAs actually make your skin more sensitive to the sun. So leave them out of your morning routine and only reach for your exfoliation toolkit before bed.
In the summer months, because you’re actively sweating more, your skin needs a little more exfoliation assistance than in the winter. Therefore, your gentle cream or gel cleanser you might be using in the winter won’t pan out as well for the summertime. Opt for something that has gentle exfoliating benefits like salicylic or glycolic acid.
Your skin might be feeling a lot less dry thanks to the natural humidity in the air during the summer, and maybe its oils have increased slightly, but that doesn’t mean you can put away the moisturizer. What you can do is switch to a lighter-based moisturizer if what you tend to use in the winter is a heavier formula.
While you should be wearing sunscreen even in the winter, you should especially be applying it during sunnier months. Not wearing sunscreen not only brings on risk of skin cancer, but UV rays are also the number one contributing factor to ageing skin. Make sure you’re wearing a minimum SPF 30, and apply it as the last step in your skincare routine.
You slathered it on in the morning so you’re good for the whole day, right? Wrong. Sunscreen degrades in the sun and ceases to protect you against UV rays, making reapplication every two hours necessary. If you’re wearing makeup, reapply with a spray sunscreen or dab a liquid sunscreen on with a sponge. And remember that childhood rule — reapply after being in the water.
You’re probably tired of hearing about sunscreen by now, but the lips are so often skipped out on when SPF is applied. Your lip skin is just as sensitive as the skin around your eye area and should be treated with extra care. Find yourself a nice SPF lip balm and keep it with you at all times, reapplying like your regular sunscreen, plus after eating and drinking.
Ok, last note about sunscreen, but it’s important. Many makeup setting powders include SPF these days, and while they’re a great additional SPF protection step and great for reapplying that sun protection throughout the day, they’re not enough protection to be used on their own. Think of them as a nice dose of added protection, but make sure you’re layering a regular sunscreen underneath to fully protect you from harmful UV rays.
The sun is extra hot today and you decide on a last-minute beach trip, but you forgot to shave your legs last night. It happens, but you might want to decide to rock those extra little hairs over shaving right before spending time in the sun. Why? Sun, sunscreen and sand can lead to bad irritation on newly shaved areas. If you can, plan ahead and give yourself 24 to 48 hours between shaving and sun tanning.
Consider the beach your golden ticket for a makeup-free day. When we lay in the sun and sweat for long hours, or go in and out of saltwater, that foundation you’re wearing can clog your pores more than normal. If you do have the desire to wear makeup to the beach, try limiting it to a light powder or a touch of concealer versus a full face of foundation.
Feeling exhausted after a hot day in the sun? Remember to squeeze in a little nighttime skincare routine before hitting the bed. All that sweat and sunscreen are a bad combination for breakouts if not rinsed off, so grab a cleanser and wash off the day. If you have a little extra time, rejuvenate and purify your skin with a clay mask as well.
That’s it! You and your skin are ready for summer adventures.
Now go bask in the sun and enjoy summer! Want to refresh your skin care routine? Go glacial with NENA now!

But that’s not all. Keep reading to discover specialized tips for different skin types.
From: Ottawa, ON
Skin Type: Oily/combination

NENA Tip: Try our Natural Skincare Kit for an easy 4-step daily routine.
From: Vancouver, BC
Skin Type: Normal/oily
Skincare Tip: “For people who are getting into skincare I always suggest focusing on having a good cleanser, exfoliator and sunscreen. Skincare can feel overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be!”
NENA Tip: Try our Cleansing Cream which removes environmental pollutants, makeup and dead skin cells to reveal a fresh, glowing appearance.

Skin Type: Combination
Skincare Tip: “Always wear sunscreen! Bring it down to the chest, your neck and decolletage. You need daily protection in more places than you think.”
From: Vancouver, BC
Skin Type: Oily/acne-prone
Skincare Tip: “The best possible advice I can give is to talk to a professional and actually figure out what your skin type is, especially after big changes in your life like having a child. Before my first daughter was born I had normal skin. After my second I thought my skin was just a bit on the sensitive side. It turns out I have acne and I hate to think of all the money I wasted on skincare that wasn't actually meeting the needs of my skin.”
From: Surrey, BC
Skin Type: Normal/oily
Skincare Tip: “I religiously apply a Vitamin C serum and sunscreen in the morning and retinol at night. Also, invest in a visor that fits in your purse so you have sun coverage with you everywhere you go!”

From: Vancouver, BC
Skin Type: Normal to dry
Skincare Tip: “Always go to bed with clean skin. The two things I do daily for my skin are to cleanse and moisturize. I’ve been putting on moisturizer every day since I was a kid — everything else is a bonus! Also, if you’re spending the day at home, don’t wear makeup and give your skin a chance to breathe.”
NENA Tip: Try our Moisturizing Cream to help restore skin elasticity and firmness, hydrate and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.
From: Toronto, ON
Skin Type: Dry
Skincare Tip: “One of my favourite skincare tips is to use a face mist before and after your hyaluronic serum or toner for extra hydration.”
From: Edmonton, AB
Skin Type: Sensitive/combination
Skincare Tip: “My skin is very sensitive and prone to breakouts. The best skincare tip I have is to drink lots of water, always wash your face and moisturize before bed. A good face mask also makes all the difference if you have sensitive skin and I recommend doing it at least once a week. A clarifying and deep cleaning mask takes away all the impurities and helps prevent future breakouts.”

The baby’s taking a nap. The house is clean. The kids are bathed and dreaming away. Now what? You finally have a rare evening where you have time to yourself and can put the to-do list away, so what do you do? Here are some tips compiled by the NENA Skincare team for making the most out of your free evening.
Take out all the rubber duckies and no tears shampoo and stash them under a towel so for a hot second you can pretend this little oasis belongs to you and you only.
Light some candles, pour some epsom salts into the water, and turn on a little jazz music (or hip hop if that’s your 7pm style) and settle in for a moment of relaxation. Bring everything you think you might need for the next 30 minutes to an hour within arm’s reach, like a book, a glass of wine, or even a snack so that you can focus solely on the moment.
Is there really anything that brings you back into the moment like sipping on a comforting drink? In order to avoid caffeine in the evenings, we suggest this delicious alternative.
INGREDIENTS
Combine all in a blender and voila! You have yourself a frothy mug of deliciousness.
How often do you get to just sit and enjoy a book uninterrupted? Probably not often.
Take this free evening of yours and grab that read you started months ago and never got to revisit, snuggle up onto the couch or dive into bed, and don’t turn off the light until you’re actually satisfied. Or until motherhood exhaustion forces you to sleep.
Some of our favourite reads right now include:
And don’t feel guilty about it! Sometimes all you want to do when you have an extra hour to yourself is re-watch your favourite TV show or get deep into an episode of your favourite reality TV obsession, and that’s perfect.
Best when accompanied by sweats, no bra, and maybe some popcorn, as long as you’re not watching cartoons, you’re good to go.
Skincare routine feeling a little neglected? Why not head to the bathroom and take ten minutes to truly indulge in yourself.

Just like these green celebrities who are making conscious decisions to be more eco-friendly in their everyday actions, here are some of the environmentally-friendly practises we’ve committed to as a company to ensure that our production line remains eco-friendly from start to finish. For example we source our clay locally in BC, using over 95% of this key ingredient in the same form that it’s harvested in, reducing waste and our carbon footprint. Our products are also vegan-friendly, with no animal byproducts used in the ingredients. Finally, our product packaging is made from recycled paper with vegetable ink used instead of synthetics, and we recently replaced our plastic mail packaging with biodegradable packing peanuts.

At NENA, we think skincare should be simple, clean, and sustainable and that environmentally friendly actions are an everyday choice.
Our glacial clay and mineral water is sourced locally in BC to reduce our carbon footprint, and processed in the same province. We’re also able to use over 95% of our clay in the same form that it’s harvested in, keeping waste to an absolute minimum while retaining the natural benefits of this key ingredient.
We also use recycled paper and vegetable oil ink for our product packaging, and recently upgraded our mail packaging to biodegradable packing peanuts that can be composted or safely rinsed down the sink.

Winter skin is dry and needs a lot more moisture help, but as the temperature warms and our skin retains more water, our skincare routine will need a little adjustment to tailor it to the coming season.
Winter meant months of drier, flakier skin, and in order to prep for that summer glow, it’s a good idea to exfoliate all the dead layers away. You can do this with either a physical exfoliant, like a gentle scrub or a soft-bristled device or with a chemical exfoliant, like glycolic acid.
If you’re new to exfoliating, take it slow and start off with only once a week to allow your skin time to adjust.
If you have a cleanser that’s your tried and true, there’s no real need to switch it up. And if you’ve been using a heavy cream cleanser for the colder months, your skin might appreciate a lighter, more gel-like formula as the weather warms up.
Our Cleansing Cream helps with the removal of environmental pollutants, makeup and dead skin cells to reveal a fresh, glowing appearance. Enriched with natural botanical extracts and minerals from Glacial Oceanic Clay, this cleanser will leave your skin soft and fresh.
If you don’t have a serum in your skincare lineup, now is a good time to introduce it. Instead of a heavier oil-based serum, like you’d use in the winter months, search for a lighter water-based product. Bonus if it has hydrating elements like hyaluronic acid and antioxidants like Vitamin C.
Our new award-winning and silicone-free Mineral Serum is perfect for your spring and summer skin. Combining the nourishing effects of Glacial Mineral Water, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin C and E, this fast-absorbing Mineral Serum is specially formulated to give your skin deep, lasting hydration, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to reveal more youthful and radiant-looking skin.
There’s more humidity in the air in the springtime than in the winter, and our skin holds onto that moisture throughout the day. For this reason, switching up your moisturizer is probably one of the easiest and best ways to transition your skin from winter to spring.
Your winter moisturizer is probably a heavier cream that takes longer to blend in, while your spring moisturizer can be a light-weight cream or even a hydrating gel formula, keeping your skin moisturized while letting it breathe a bit more.
Yes, even in winter you should be wearing SPF. UV rays can not only cause things like skin cancer, but it’s also the number one skin damager, from wrinkles to dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
While you can get away with a light SPF 15 cream or SPF in your makeup in the winter, you’ll need something stronger as the sun comes out more regularly. Opt for a minimum SPF of 30, and 50 is even better, and make this the last step in your daytime routine.
With the sun out for longer, these simple adjustments to your routine can do wonders for your skin. As much as we are so ready to enjoy sunshiny spring, our skin needs that extra boost to adapt.
Not sure where to start? Explore the gentle nourishment of NENA Glacial Skincare!
Simple, clean, sustainable and spring-ready skin inspired by and made from nature.

Happy International Women’s Day! Celebrate yourself and the women in your life by sharing the gift of simple, clean, and sustainable skincare.
No matter if you’re with a partner or significant other, rocking the day solo, or getting together with a friend or two (as per your city’s pandemic guidelines), we have some ideas on how you can make this Valentine’s Day extra special, no matter your relationship status.
Something about Valentine’s Day screams indulgence and what better way to do that than by having an at-home spa moment? To set the mood, light a candle or burn incense to really give your space that feeling of tranquility.
We suggest starting the night off with a long bath, complete with jazz music, candles, and bubbly. Whether alone or with your partner, this quiet time is sure to start your evening on the right foot. Follow that with a non-toxic mani and pedi, and keep that bubbly pouring.
You may also wish to go full spa treatment and give your partner a facial with the full NENA skincare line. Starting with cleansing and a clay mask, followed by toning and moisturizing, both you and your partner are four steps away from amazing skin. While you’re at it, make sure to include a facial and shoulder massage for the full relaxation experience.
If you’re wanting something a little more classic-cheesy, we suggest throwing on a romantic comedy movie and chilling in your sweats (we all have loads of them by now, right?), with a clay mask on. This is the perfect option if you’re with a friend or two -- or whoever your social bubble currently allows.
And might we suggest stocking up on all the candy and popcorn while you’re at it?
If your city allows it, and you’re feeling adventurous, head out for dinner or a cocktail to celebrate the evening. This could be done with anyone in your circle and allows you to throw on that special something that’s been sitting in your closet for, well, almost a year.
If you’re more of a daytime gal, head to your favourite cafe -- bonus points if they have Valentine’s Day themed beverages -- and bring your favourite romantic novel along with you for your very own Valentine’s Day celebration.
Maybe your city’s restaurants aren’t open for dining-in right now, or you’d just feel safer in the great outdoors. Might we suggest a walk through your favourite neighbourhood or an evening snowshoe adventure? Maybe you can bundle up and enjoy hot chocolate in a park?
If you do head out of your home for the evening, don’t forget your mask and hand sanitizer to help you stay save!
Getting mail is just not a common thing anymore, and what better way to show someone you care than by slotting something special in the mail for them. Take the time to write them a card, or even have a craft night and decorate special Valentine’s Day cards for the people in your life.
If you feel like being extra sweet, why not make a batch of your favourite cookies or sweet treats and do some distanced drop-offs to your friends and family? It’s a great way to express your love while also getting in a much-needed wave from those you might miss.
One way we want to share our love with you is through our special Valentine’s Day offer.

It’s no secret that face masks are going to be around for some time, and while many of us were using disposable ones in the beginning, most have since shifted to reusable masks to keep ourselves safe and the landfills a little less clogged.
As a stocking stuffer gift idea, why not surprise your friends with something that keeps them safe and goes with their favourite outfits? These face masks come in a variety of options (like, so many!), so every friend can feel special.
You can also check out our made-in-Canada NENA Reusable Face Mask that’s double lined with a filter pocket, and adjustable earloops. It comes in a neutral colour that will match any outfit. Reusable and machine washable, you can buy it here, or receive as a free gift starting December 1st with purchases C$75 and up.

Many of us turn to yoga and movement when looking to quiet our minds, and if 2020 has taught us anything it’s that a practice like this is worth cherishing.
While many studios have opened back up to the public, maybe your mom isn’t quite ready to return to working out in-person. Studios like Peloton and Open offer virtual-only classes, giving people the freedom to move anywhere. Moreover, if you purchase a class package for someone, you could even join them virtually for a class! We love gift ideas that bring people together without sacrificing safety.
Dry, cracked hands are common in winter, especially when we’re having to wash and sanitize our hands more than ever.
Enriched with organic aloe vera, calendula and blueberry, our NENA Hydrating Hand Sanitizer hydrates your hands to help with the drying effect of alcohol. Aromatic litsea and lavender create a sense of freshness, and best yet, you can get it as a bundle of three, so it’s an easy gift idea to pop one into everyone’s stocking (and keep one for yourself while you’re at it). Also available, NENA Antibacterial Hand Sanitizer.
Now that we’re all spending more time in our homes, from sleeping to working, to even daycare for some, our needs have shifted. Maybe the dining table isn’t the best desk option for your entrepreneur friend, or maybe you know your grandma could use a new lamp to brighten her space.
We love Canadian companies like Article and Structube, where you can either pick out that lamp for them or give them a gift card and allow them to design their space themselves. Either way, this gift will make anyone feel a little more okay with spending so much time at home.
We don’t know about you, but we’ve been reading more books than ever this year. Books have become the perfect escape, putting a pause button on what’s happening outside so we can dive into a fantasy world or dream about travelling.
Audiobooks are the perfect gift for readers and non-readers, as it allows them to listen while cleaning the house, going for a short walk around the neighbourhood, or taking a long, luxurious bath. You can buy that book that’s been on their wishlist, or get them a monthly subscription so they can power through their ever-growing reading list.
An unconventional holiday season calls for creative gift ideas.
We hope this guide helps you get excited for this holiday season, whether you’re visiting friends and family in person, or sending hugs through Zoom.
If there’s one skincare or wellness trend that’s here to stay, it’s clean beauty. As we become more discerning of what we put on our skin, many brands shift to clean, natural ingredients that are sustainably sourced.
But what does clean beauty really mean? Different brands have their own definition of clean beauty. After all, there’s very little regulation when it comes to cosmetics or skincare, leaving the beauty industry to regulate itself. However, what seems to be common across most brands is the dedication to making beauty safer and more sustainable, by shifting to natural, non-toxic ingredients.
If you’re searching for a new product to try, you’re sure to come across terms like “natural”, “organic”, “non-toxic”, “green”, and “sustainable”, especially from brands that appeal to the growing segment of women who aim for natural beauty. These are often mixed and matched, but have very distinct differences. We can break it down for you.
Put simply, it’s anything derived from or made with natural ingredients from plants, animal by-products, or minerals. The quality of these ingredients are preserved in the manufacturing process, and no chemicals or artificial ingredients are added to it.
When you think organic, you think natural. These two are often used interchangeably, however, the key difference lies in the growing of the natural ingredients used. Organic products are stricter in the sense that no chemical herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and antibiotics are used in the majority of the components.
This is the most straightforward out of all the buzzwords around, and probably the base requirement for all clean brands. What this means is that the product is free of any chemical that can be harmful or have adverse effects on your skin such as phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, synthetic colors or scents, and triclosan among many others.
“Green” is often synonymous to “sustainable” when it comes to how brands describe their product, and is one of the major buzzwords for skincare. The key difference would be that green products are eco-friendly, highlighting their lack of potential for environmental harm and animal cruelty. These would be the ones that are not tested on any animal or contain any chemical that can possibly harm the environment.
To be sustainable is to be green and more. It’s the broader term of the two, and is primarily designed with the future in mind not just for the environment, but also for the community. A truly sustainable product puts careful consideration in the producing, harvesting, manufacturing, distributing, and recycling processes so that it’s environmentally, economically, and socially good from start to finish.
These buzzwords, while can be a bit confusing at times, are indicative of our growing consciousness in terms of the products we choose to support. Now, it’s no longer enough to simply look at the final product. We also consider how these products are made and packaged. Most importantly, we scrutinize the ingredients used in making them. After all, if a product is clean, natural, and good for the environment, then it’s highly likely that it will also be good for our skin. We go beyond brand names and look at the brand’s sustainability promise.
With so many brands claiming to be clean, it’s important to verify how legitimate that claim is. An easy way to check is to see if it’s vetted by the Environmental Working Group, dedicated to empowering women to make well-informed decisions in what they buy. If there’s an EWG-verified mark on the product, you can be assured that it’s clean and safe not just for you, but also for the world around you.

Face cleansing couldn't be easier, right? You simply pick up some soap, lather it up, and pat dry!
Unfortunately, it isn't always that simple. The products you use and the way you apply them can have a direct effect on your complexion. If you're still struggling with dull, dry, or irritated skin, your daily regimen could be to blame.
In fact, a recent survey reveals that up to 80% of Americans use improper products and techniques to wash their face. If you're sudsing up and going out without giving any real thought to the process, this could include you.
The good news? There's always an opportunity to reverse any potential damage caused. The key is identifying where you're making errors and learning how to make smarter choices moving forward.
Today, we're sharing 10 common mistakes that people usually make when they cleanse their skin. Read on to discover the missteps to avoid and the products that can revolutionize your skincare routine, starting today.
With so many options on the shelf, it's easy to become overwhelmed when you're shopping the skincare aisle. Yet, it pays to do your research and understand what you're putting on your delicate facial skin. The journey to flawless skin begins with knowing your skin type and choosing products accordingly.
Ultimately, not every cleanser is created equal. There are some best-suited to sensitive or breakout-prone skin, as well as those specifically formulated for oily, extra dry, or combination skin.
Then, there are cleansers that are designed for use on all skin types thanks to balanced and gentle formulas. Our award-winning Cleansing Cream is a prime example of the best cleanser for dry and oily skin. At the same time, it's also the best cleanser for sensitive skin!
This deeply purifying and moisturizing cream is effective against dirt, grime, makeup, and pollutants, but gentle enough to leave your skin soft and glowing. What makes it such a powerhouse? Our Cleansing Cream is made with Glacial Oceanic Clay found only in Canada.
This clay lightly exfoliates while infusing your skin with more than 60 minerals and rare earth elements. Fragrance-free and scented only with natural essential oils, this is the natural skincare solution you can feel great about.
Other key ingredients include:
These anti-oxidant rich botanical extracts are a natural source of skin-loving ingredients, including Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and vitamin C, that help encourage skin cell turnover and renewal.
For instance, glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane, delivers an instantly softer and smoother texture to your skin. In addition, our cleanser also includes lactic acid (an AHA extract of bilberry), citric acid from lemon and orange fruit, and malic and tartaric acids from sugar maple!
What happens when all of these skin superstars combine? Your complexion is left hydrated, detoxed, purified, and soothed.
In addition, our cleanser also tightens pores and delivers noticeable anti-aging benefits! In clinical trials, Glacial Oceanic Clay was found to reduce skin-surface sebum (excess oil) by up to 95% and increase collagen production by 70%.
As you shop for a new cleanser, be sure to read the ingredients, research the company, and make sure the product is designed to meet your specific skincare needs. With our Cleansing Cream, the answers are obvious, transparent, and refreshingly simple. To hear what others are saying about it, be sure to check out our product reviews on our website or Amazon!
It's a common misconception that scrubbing your face multiple times a day will make it cleaner or less prone to breakouts. While it's important to wash with a gentle cleanser at least once a day, many people tend to overdo it.
If you have dry skin, washing one time in the evening is often all that you need. If your skin is oily, you can cleanse both morning and night. Washing too often can dry out your skin and trigger the production of extra sebum, which can undermine your efforts.
As you cleanse your face, resist the urge to adjust the water as hot as possible. Doing so will not make your products more effective, and can even burn your skin. If you already suffer from acne or rosacea, the redness that follows a hot-water cleanse can also make your symptoms more noticeable.
At the very least, turning up the heat will result in excessive dryness which (as discussed), will encourage greater sebum production. Yet, it's also unwise to use ice-cold water, as this can seal your pores shut and prevent them from receiving all of the nutrients that your cleanser provides. For best results, stick to lukewarm water!
Are you used to slathering on a drugstore cleanser and immediately rinsing it off? If so, you could be depriving your skin.
When you invest in a premium-quality solution like our Cleansing Cream, it's important to understand how to use it correctly.
First, shake it well before using to evenly distribute the ingredients. Then, apply the cleanser to your fingertips and add a little water to emulsify the product and create a lather. Next, apply the lather to your face in circular motions. Rather than rushing this step, spending a few seconds massaging the cleanser into your skin to help break down any oils.
Finally, rinse completely with lukewarm water. Taking your time during this routine can help ensure that you get the maximum benefits possible out of your skincare products.
Exfoliation is an important part of your skincare regimen. Gently exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and allows your products to penetrate more deeply into your pores. Yet, it's very easy to become overzealous with this step.
Relying on harsh physical or chemical exfoliants on a regular basis can leave your skin feeling tight, irritated, red, and dry. Instead of these extra products, stick an all-in-one solution like our Cleansing Cream that delivers a gently and effective daily dose of natural exfoliation without the damaging side effects.
Still relying on a washcloth to get your skin clean? Unless you're swapping it out for a clean one every day, you could be introducing dirt, debris, and bacteria from yesterday back onto your skin.
It easiest (and cleanest) to stick to washing with your hands. Just remember to wash your hands before you wash your face!
Especially when you're always in a rush to get out the door, it's easy to fall into the habit of grabbing a towel and rubbing your face dry after cleansing. However, we always recommend gently patting your skin dry instead.
Why? Rubbing your face can irritate your skin and deprive it of the natural nutrients it needs, including proteins, lipids and important fatty acids.
Quick-fix solutions such as makeup wipes are a byproduct of our convenience-driven culture. Yes, they're appropriate to stash in your gym bag for a quick cool-down after a sweat session, but they're never an ideal substitute for a real, thorough daily cleansing.
Most of these products actually smear and distribute dirt and oil on your face rather than actually eliminating it. If left to linger, this can lead to breakouts. If you must swipe on a makeup wipe, remember to properly cleanse as soon as you get home.
You should apply toner as soon as you pat your face dry after cleansing, while your skin is still slightly damp. Though it's easy to forget this step, it's more important than you might think.
Toners are lightweight, quick-absorbing liquids that help remove any excess traces of dirt, oil, and makeup from your skin. In addition, they can also help balance and restore your skin's pH levels and even help keep acne at bay. Today, you can find specially-formulated toners designed to tackle a variety of skin concerns, from aging and dryness to oiliness and redness.
For a natural toner suitable for all skin types, check out our Mineral Toner! One splash tones, refreshes, firms, and hydrates skin with glacial minerals and antioxidant-rich botanical extracts.
Knowing how to cleanse properly and choose the right toner is the first part. Yet, don't forget to follow up your toner with a moisturizer. Doing so helps your skin lock in all of the hydration it just received.
Looking for a new one? Our Mineral Moisturizing Cream is the perfect solution, featuring Glacial Mineral Water extracted from Glacial Oceanic Clay, along with soothing ingredients including jojoba oil and aloe vera.
If you're cleansing in the morning, allow your moisturizer to sink in and feel dry to the touch. Then, remember to apply a facial sunscreen before you head out the door! At night, you can skip the SPF, but replace that post-moisturizer step with any serums or special applications (such as acne spot treatments) that your dermatologist recommends.
These days, you can find thousands of skincare products that promise to deliver a glowy, problem-free complexion. Yet, for all of this variety, face cleansing doesn't have to feel complicated.
For the most effective, long-lasting results, look to nature.

A few months ago, we took simple acts like washing our hands for granted. Maybe we washed after using the restroom or going out in public, maybe we didn't - it wasn't a big deal.
However, as the spread of COVID 19 has taken hold of the planet and led to the shutdown of most of the world's countries, including Canada's major cities, washing our hands has become a staple of our daily routines. For people at the forefront of the battle against this motile virus, unfortunately, handwashing has become both their savior and their adversary. Dry hands are just one negative side effect of repetitive handwashing.
Repetitive handwashing in doctors, nurses, and other health professionals has led to flaky, cracked, and painful dryness in their hands. It may not seem like an overwhelming issue, but the longer COVID 19 sticks around, the more people will be forced to continually abuse their hands with harsh sanitizers and excessive handwashing.
But what if there was a better option? What if practicing good hand hygiene amongst this deadly virus didn't' have to come with negative side effects, even for nurses and doctors?
Keep reading to learn how to maintain healthy, hydrated skin during one of the scariest viral outbreaks in modern history.
In order to understand how to remediate a problem, you must first learn why the problem exists in the first place. If you're wondering "Why are my hands so dry?" the truth can be found in the ingredients list of the soaps and sanitizers you're using.
Alcohol-based sanitizers are the most effective for killing germs and bacteria, and therefore, the most commonly used in hospitals and other health facilities. Unfortunately, constantly exposing your hands to alcohol-based sanitizers will dry them out, especially during viral outbreaks where hand sanitizing and washing increases tenfold.
The cleaning agents in both soaps and sanitizers destroy germs and bacteria, yes. However, they also damage the skin's natural moisture barrier that defends against further water loss.
If you haven't experienced it yet for yourself, you may be wondering "What's so bad about a little dry skin?" In truth, increasingly dry skin can lead to a lot of pain and discomfort, as your hands become flaky, chapped, or cracked.
These conditions in your hands can make things like washing and using hand sanitizer unbearable. Moreover, having openings in your skin can make you even more vulnerable to contracting viruses like COVID 19.
To deal with dry hands, using a moisturizer is a must. Even before the outbreak of COVID 19, doctors have recommended regularly moisturizing with creams or lotions. The question is, which is better - lotion or hand cream?
In most cases, when dealing with incredibly dry skin, hand cream is going to be a better product than hand lotion. This is because the best dry hand cream products are thicker and provide a more effective moisture barrier.
Hand creams are versatile and can come in a jar or bottle, being dispensed through a pump or by hand. However, while it may be slightly more convenient for application, thinner lotion solutions evaporate faster, providing inadequate protection for severely dry hands.
Additionally, there are several moisturizing creams that are safe to use on both your hands and face. This is a must for people who tend towards dry skin, blemishes, acne, and more. In our opinion, the best hand lotion for dry hands isn't a lotion at all, it's hand cream.
Now that you know what products to use, you're probably wondering when to use them. What is the best time to moisturize?
While it may seem tedious, experts recommend moisturizing after each handwashing or hand-sanitizing. This practice is especially important when you're forced by circumstances to engage in washing and sanitizing more frequently. Remember, you're washing away your skin's hydrating oils and waxes every time you wash.
Additionally, we recommend applying a heavy coat of thick hand cream at night, just before bed. This will help your hands heal throughout the night when you're not using and abusing them.
However, this tactic is even more effective if you wear cotton gloves over your hands for as much of the night as possible. The gloves will help keep the moisture trapped while you sleep, rather than getting smeared off on your blankets or pillows.
Moisturizers have a myriad of benefits. The most important one, of course, is rehydrating your hands. However, there are several other noteworthy perks of using a moisturizer:
When it comes to preventing dry hands, knowing what ingredients to avoid is key in understanding how to keep your skin healthy. You may not be able to avoid alcohol in sanitizers, but you can avoid other harmful ingredients in your skincare products. If a product lists Fragrance or Parfume under its ingredients list, for example, it means the smell comes from a mixture of chemicals.
Instead, look for fragrances that come from essential oils and other natural sources. Refer to the link above for more ingredients to steer clear from.
What if you must continue using hand sanitizer but consistent moisturizing isn't an option? For the doctors, nurses, CNAs, and other health professionals reading this, you may be doubting your ability to moisturize after each handwashing or sanitizing. And you're probably right.
Fortunately, we've come up with the perfect solution.
Until COVID 19 has run its course, we know that people in all industries can't afford to stop washing or sanitizing their hands. To do so would be devastating. However, we also know that continuing to use sanitizer will only make your dry hands worse.
That's why we've engineered a hand sanitizer that kills harmful bacteria and germs while simultaneously working to rehydrate your skin. Our sanitizer contains 72 percent v/v ethyl alcohol (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with a minimum of 60% alcohol to be effective against COVID-19) to maintain efficacy but also contains glycerin, calendula, aloe vera, and glacial mineral water to help fight against the alcohol's drying effect. To help create a sense of freshness, our sanitizer also contains aromatic natural oils from lavender and litsea cubeba fruit.
Before we wrap up, we think it's important you learn everything you can about preventing dry, chapped, flaky, and cracked skin. While moisturizers and our new hand sanitizer are absolutely vital to healing and preventing dry hands, there are other steps you should be taking as well.
When washing your hands, it's important not to get too aggressive. Use the necessary amount of soap but not a thick lather, which can wash away even more of your natural skin oils. You should also avoid harsh soaps and detergents.
Additionally, use warm or cold water, not hot water. Hot water can damage your keratin cells that reside on the outer layer of your skin. This makes it easier for your skin to dry out and become irritated.
When drying your hands, take your time to dab or pat your skin dry, rather than rubbing it. Rubbing your skin dry can pull off the remaining oils on your skin and will also cause irritation and dryness.
Finally, remember to apply hand cream or another moisturizer once you've finished.
To some level, you're only as healthy on the outside as you are on the inside. One of the best ways to avoid dry hands is by staying hydrated throughout the day. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water.
As a healthcare professional, we know how busy your day can be, running around from one patient's room to the next. However, you should try to bring a water bottle to work with you and commit to drinking several bottles a day.
Finally, consider using an air humidifier in your home. You probably can't control the humidity at your place of work, but you can keep the air more humid in your bedroom. The added moisture in the air will help hydrate your skin while you sleep.
We're living in scary and somewhat unprecedented times. While the world has seen several viral outbreaks in the past, COVID 19 is by far the most significant in our modern world. Stay consistent while practicing good hygiene habits, such as social distancing and handwashing.
But remember, you're not alone. As a country, as a planet, we are all experiencing the same fears. While we're not completely out of the woods yet, this event will soon pass and become a part of history.
Until then, stay safe and do what you can to maintain the best quality of life possible. Stay social with technology and social media, spend intimate time with the people in your household, and take some time to explore new and old hobbies alike.
And if you need any help with skincare or excessive dry hands from overwashing, you know where to find us. Check out some of our other articles, shop our online store, or contact us today with any questions or concerns.
Made primarily from the mineral kaolinite, it is also sometimes known as white clay or China clay. But what you might not know is that kaolin clay is used in many industries besides skincare: from paint, to toothpaste, to farming and agriculture, and the production of paper.
Below, we expand on two surprising and scary uses for kaolin clay.
In farming and agriculture, spray dried kaolin grades are used as a carrier for pesticides. Kaolin increases the surface area of particles, allowing for better absorption of the active pesticide ingredient.
Similarly, kaolin is also used as a coating for seeds. The increased seed size improves handling and plantability, protecting them against adverse field conditions.
In urea fertilizer, the addition of Kaolin in the final steps of the manufacturing process can help retain the granular nature of the fertilizer and prevent caking.
Home gardeners have also turned to kaolin clay as a deterrent for insect pests, when mixed with water and used as a spray. As a tip for gardeners using kaolin clay: “You should use a dust mask and goggles to protect your eyes, mouth, and nose when you handle and mix it. The powder is non-toxic, and will not seriously harm you, but inhaling it and/or getting it in your eyes would be unpleasant.”
If gardeners using kaolin clay are being advised to use a dust mask and googles to protect their eyes, mouth, and nose when mixing kaolin, why would anyone voluntarily put this on their face as a skincare treatment?

In the paint industry, kaolin increases the durability of coatings, providing painted surfaces with more resistance to stains and scrubs. Kaolin can also help increase paint pigment opacity, and are used extensively in high-performance settings and in specialty coatings where durability is key, including traffic paint, textured paint, baking enamels and coil coatings.
Is this still an ingredient you want to put on your face?
Going through a chemical reaction called calcination, Kaolin is also commonly adapted for use in the construction industry. When mixed with cement, it provides added strength and durability for concrete, reducing permeability and cracking.
With so many harsh industrial uses for kaolin clay, certainly this can’t be a gentle solution to treat your skincare concerns?
Kaolin is scary as a skincare product, but its alternatives have their own challenges too. Bentonite Clay (also known as Aztec Clay), for example, is often promoted as an acne treatment.
The highly absorbent mineral properties of Bentonite Clay help absorb acne-causing oils, but because it can hold over 300% of its mass in water, not only will bentonite clay absorb oil, it’ll also suck your skin dry. Dehydrated skin can lead to an overproduction of sebum, which then leads to acne, and the cycle begins again.
If you’re already familiar with NENA Skincare, you’ll probably already know our answer: Glacial Oceanic Clay.
Harvested from the waters of Northern BC, mineral-rich Glacial Oceanic Clay helps naturally exfoliate the skin, remove contaminants and toxins, and increase collagen production. Especially if you have concerns with acne, oily skin, blemishes, redness of the skin, or enlarged pores, Glacial Clay is naturally effective in treating these concerns.
Unlike kaolin, glacial clay is only used in the skincare industry. Unlike bentonite, it won’t dry out your skin, on the contrary - it maintains your skin’s moisture levels.
Other skincare benefits of glacial clay include:
How to exfoliate your skin at home? It’s easy! This blog post shares the difference between scrubs, peels, and masks, and provides tips on how to best exfoliate your skin at home.
When you think of an exfoliant, the traditional option is a gritty scrub, a physical exfoliant with a sandy texture that polishes the surface of your skin, physically removing dead skin, debris, or excess oil from the epidermis -- the top layer -- of your skin.
The benefit of a scrub is that you can control the vigour and pressure of the product and actually feel the dead skin being sloughed off your face. However, the downside is that the same grit that helps exfoliate can be abrasive and scratch the surface of your skin and cause damage, especially for sensitive skin.
Also, scrubs only benefit the top layer of your skin and don’t necessarily go deeper to address the root of your skincare concerns.
A peel serves the same exfoliation purpose, but uses chemistry (like acids or enzymes) to go beneath the top layer of your skin to tackle clogged pores and blemishes.
A peel typically starts off with a gel-like consistency which hardens on your skin when put in contact with air. You've probably seen glitter peel-of masks go viral on social media. To remove, the entire layer can then be peeled off your skin, with the satisfying feeling of stripping away clogged pores or debris from your skin.
Some DIY peel off masks use glue as a base - those can be quite harmful and irritating to the skin. Instead, look for peel off masks that use natural ingredients and avoid those that contain irritating and drying ingredients such as alcohol, glue (usually made of polymer vinyl and acetone) or artificial fragrances.
Peel-off masks may also contribute to the sagging of the skin from the repeated pulling motion. To counteract this, when peeling off your mask, do so in an upwards manner.
Similar to a peel off mask, a face mask is something you also keep on your face for a short period of time, while your skin absorbs the nutrients. However, unlike a peel-off mask, the product doesn’t harden into a single layer.
Instead, most face masks require for you to wash the product off after applying. From clay masks to sheet masks, every mask has different benefits and application processes, with the objective of improving different skincare concerns.
At NENA Skincare, we specialize in natural glacial oceanic clay as our main ingredient in our clay mask product, which have clinically proven benefits of: collagen production (for anti-aging), reducing skin surface sebum (aids with acne) and minimizes the appearance of pores (for clear skin).
Our Clay Mask product uses a concentration of 99% Glacial Clay, meaning your skin harnesses the full benefits of our clay, compared to other brands which use only 10 - 15% and top up with fillers.
